Frequently asked questions

We've put together some common questions and answers to help you get the most out of your Emily-Jayne Candles products. From safety tips to extending their life, we've got you covered.

What are the most important things to know for safe use?

All our candles and wax melts are made with fragrance oil, not essential oil, making them safer around children and pets. A care card will be included with all your orders for detailed instructions.

How can I make my candles and wax melts last longer?

Always trim the wick to 5mm (1/4 inch) before lighting. Burn the candle for 2 to 4 hours per session, allowing the wax to melt completely to the edges, and never leave it burning for more than 4 hours at a time. Always let the wax melt all the way to the edges of the jar on your very first burn (usually takes 2-3 hours). This establishes a "memory pool" that prevents your candle from tunneling (digging a narrow hole straight down).

Do you have tips for getting the best scent from my products?

If we have custom created a gift for you, all freshly made candles will need to be left to cure for 7-10 days before use to achieve the best scent throw.

Where should I place my burning candles?

Keep burning candles away from fans, open windows, or air conditioning vents. Moving air causes an uneven flame, soot buildup, and potential fire hazards.

How should I extinguish my candle?

Avoid blowing out the candle. Instead, use a candle snuffer to cut off the oxygen, or a wick dipper to gently push the wick into the hot wax, which prevents smoke and primes it for the next lighting.

When should I stop burning my candle?

Stop burning your candle when there is about 1 to 1.5 cm (or 1/2 inch) of wax remaining at the bottom. Burning past this point risks overheating the container.
